French Clothing Alterations: Explain the Fit You Want - article illustration

A pair of trousers fits at the waist but drags on the floor. Asking for a smaller size would describe a different solution. At an alterations counter, your useful vocabulary concerns the part that needs changing, the result you want, and the measurement that both people understand.

Quick answer

For clothing alterations, name the garment and the part that needs adjusting. Raccourcir means shorten, while reprendre à la taille can mean take in at the waist. State whether a number describes the amount of change or the finished measurement. Ask the person doing the work to confirm the marked length, feasibility, price, and collection time before treating the alteration as agreed.

Describe the fit before choosing the work

Ce pantalon est trop long (These trousers are too long) identifies a length problem. Il est trop large à la taille (They are too loose at the waist) identifies a different dimension. French treats un pantalon as singular, so the following pronoun and adjective also remain singular.

Pointing can support the description, but a named part makes it easier to record. Les manches sont trop longues (The sleeves are too long) concerns the sleeves, not the whole jacket. La veste me serre aux épaules (The jacket is tight across my shoulders) reports the fit without claiming that a particular alteration is possible.

What you meanUseful FrenchWhat the listener learns
Too much lengthLa jupe est trop longue. The skirt needs a length discussion.
Excess width at the waistLa taille est trop large. The waistband area is loose.
Restricted movementJe suis gêné quand je lève les bras.Raising the arms feels restricted.
Desired location of a hemJe voudrais que le bas arrive ici.You are indicating a finished position.

The French clothing vocabulary guide helps identify garments. At the fitting, add the relevant part and your experience of the fit. A complete garment name alone rarely tells the person what adjustment you want.

Ask for an alteration without prescribing a technique

Pourriez-vous raccourcir les manches ? (Could you shorten the sleeves?) requests an outcome. Est-ce possible de reprendre ce pantalon à la taille ? (Is it possible to take these trousers in at the waist?) leaves feasibility open. The person inspecting the garment can explain what the construction allows.

Faire un ourlet means make a hem. An existing hem may be altered when a garment is shortened, but “hem” and “shorten” do not name exactly the same thing. Je voudrais raccourcir la jupe en gardant un aspect similaire (I would like to shorten the skirt while keeping a similar appearance) states your preference without supplying sewing instructions.

Check which area will change

Seulement en bas, pas à la taille (Only at the bottom, not at the waist) limits the requested work. For a jacket, Je souhaite garder la longueur de la veste (I want to keep the jacket’s length) prevents a sleeve adjustment from being confused with shortening the jacket itself.

If a proposed change differs from your request, ask Qu’est-ce que cela changera exactement ? (What exactly will that change?) This gives the other person room to explain. You can then decide whether the described result matches what you meant.

Distinguish the amount removed from the final length

Raccourcir de deux centimètres (Shorten by two centimetres) describes a reduction. It does not specify the finished length. Une longueur finale de soixante-dix centimètres (A finished length of seventy centimetres) describes the result, but still needs an agreed starting point for measurement.

Compare these fictional notes:

  • Enlever deux centimètres en longueur. (Remove two centimetres from the length.)
  • Longueur finale : soixante-dix centimètres, mesurée depuis ce repère. (Finished length: seventy centimetres, measured from this reference point.)

The numbers answer different questions. Do not turn a reduction into a final measurement when repeating the instruction. The French numbers guide covers saying the quantities; here the crucial language is de for the amount changed and longueur finale for the result.

Make the reference visible

Vous mesurez à partir d’où ? (Where are you measuring from?) is a practical clarification. C’est bien le repère pour la longueur finale ? (Is this the mark for the finished length?) checks the meaning of a pin or mark. Neither question assumes how the person should carry out the work.

Worked fitting: confirm one change and preserve another

In this fictional fitting, the trousers fit at the waist. The customer wants them shorter, and the agreed mark represents a two-centimetre reduction. Read the exchange for the information that becomes confirmed.

Customer: Ce pantalon me va à la taille, mais il est trop long. (These trousers fit at the waist, but they are too long.)

Alterations worker: Vous souhaitez cette longueur ? (Would you like this length?)

Customer: Oui. Cela correspond à deux centimètres en moins ? (Yes. Does that mean two centimetres shorter?)

Alterations worker: Oui, c’est bien cela. (Yes, that is right.)

Customer: D’accord, deux centimètres en moins, sans modifier la taille. Quel serait le prix total ? (All right, two centimetres shorter, without changing the waist. What would the total price be?)

The customer confirms the amount and the unchanged area separately. The exchange has not yet established a price or collection time. A useful final question is Quand pourrai-je venir le récupérer ? (When can I come and collect it?) The pronoun refers to the singular pantalon.

Common mistakes when repeating the agreement

Taille can refer to a clothing size or the waist. Changer de taille (Change size) and reprendre à la taille (Take in at the waist) are different requests. Add the garment and the physical area if the conversation could support either interpretation.

Avoid calling an alteration une altération simply because it resembles English. For an adjustment to clothing, une retouche is the useful noun. Also distinguish raccourcir from rétrécir: the first targets length, while the second describes making or becoming smaller or narrower more generally.

Memory tip: garment, part, result, confirmation

Write four short labels on a practice note. Under “garment,” put pantalon; under “part,” put bas des jambes; under “result,” put the agreed reduction; under “confirmation,” put the outstanding questions. This prevents an unconfirmed price or deadline from slipping into your final summary as a fact.

The French question guide offers ways to phrase those questions. At a counter, a short complete question with a clear noun is usually easier to confirm than a long sentence containing several unrelated requests.

Practice: repair the fitting message

  1. Ask whether the sleeves can be shortened without changing the jacket’s overall length.
  2. Explain that two centimetres is the reduction, not the finished measurement.
  3. Ask where a proposed final length is measured from.

Answers and explanations

  1. Peut-on raccourcir les manches sans changer la longueur de la veste ? (Can the sleeves be shortened without changing the jacket’s length?) The two lengths have separate noun complements.
  2. Je voudrais enlever deux centimètres à la longueur actuelle. (I would like to remove two centimetres from the current length.) This identifies the amount of change explicitly.
  3. Cette longueur est mesurée à partir d’où ? (Where is this length measured from?) The question checks the reference point before you confirm the number.

Frequently asked

Questions about this note

Does une couture always mean a clothing alteration?

No. Une couture can mean a seam or stitching. Une retouche names an alteration made to adjust an existing garment.

What is une doublure inside a jacket?

It is the lining. Mention la doublure if you mean the inside layer rather than the jacket's outer fabric.

Can I call every alterations business a tailleur?

Un tailleur can name a tailor, but an alterations service may advertise retouches or couture. Use the business's wording rather than assuming a particular specialty.
