French Rental Repair Request: Describe a Home Problem
Write a clear rental repair request in French, describe a fault without guessing its cause, arrange access, and follow up politely with useful exercises.
Quick answer
A clear rental repair request identifies the problem, its location, and when it started, then asks for the next step. Say Le robinet de la cuisine fuit (The kitchen tap is leaking), rather than guessing the cause. Include your availability if someone needs to visit. These are communication patterns, not advice about repair responsibility, tenancy rights, or safe repair procedures.

Describe what you can observe
Il y a un problème dans l’appartement (There is a problem in the flat) opens a conversation but gives little information. Name the object and room next. La fenêtre de la chambre ne ferme plus (The bedroom window no longer closes) is much easier to understand than a general complaint that something is broken.
Use ne… plus when the object previously worked but no longer does. Le chauffage ne fonctionne pas (The heating is not working) states the current problem. Le chauffage ne fonctionne plus (The heating is no longer working) also suggests a change from an earlier working state. Choose the version that fits what you know.
Useful descriptions of faults
| French sentence | English gloss | Observation |
|---|---|---|
| Le robinet goutte. | (The tap is dripping.) | Water dripping |
| La porte ferme mal. | (The door does not close properly.) | A closure problem |
| Le volet est bloqué. | (The shutter is stuck.) | Something cannot move normally |
| Il y a une tache au plafond. | (There is a stain on the ceiling.) | A visible mark |
These phrases report symptoms in ordinary language. They do not identify a technical cause. Je ne sais pas d’où cela vient (I do not know what is causing it) is an honest addition when needed. For room and household nouns, use the house vocabulary guide rather than translating each English word literally.
Write a short message with enough context
An email subject can be Problème de fenêtre dans la chambre (Problem with the bedroom window). In the message, include the address or flat identifier your contact needs, then describe the issue.
A sample message
Bonjour, la fenêtre de la chambre ne ferme plus depuis hier. Elle reste entrouverte. Pourriez-vous m’indiquer comment organiser une intervention ? Je suis disponible jeudi après-midi. Merci d’avance pour votre retour. (Hello, the bedroom window has not closed since yesterday. It remains ajar. Could you tell me how to arrange a visit? I am available on Thursday afternoon. Thank you in advance for your reply.)
Une intervention (A service visit or work on a problem) is common in repair correspondence. It does not necessarily mean a major operation or a completed repair. Votre retour (Your reply) is a correspondence expression here, not a request for someone to physically return to the flat.
The sample keeps the request conditional: pourriez-vous (Could you). That suits an unfamiliar property contact. The French email phrases guide provides openings and closings if you need a more formal version, but clarity matters more than ceremonial wording.
Add timing without inventing a diagnosis
Depuis hier (Since yesterday) says when an ongoing problem began. Depuis une semaine (For a week) gives its duration. You can also say J’ai remarqué le problème ce matin (I noticed the problem this morning), which describes your observation rather than claiming that the fault definitely began then.
After a trip, you may know when you noticed a mark but not when it appeared. À mon retour, j’ai remarqué une tache (When I returned, I noticed a stain) avoids supplying a start date you cannot confirm. The depuis lesson explains the ongoing-time construction.
- Le problème s’est aggravé depuis mon dernier message. (The problem has worsened since my last message.)
- La situation n’a pas changé. (The situation has not changed.)
- Je peux vous envoyer une photo. (I can send you a photo.)
Choose only a sentence that matches the situation. Do not invent a cause or damage. If you need urgent help, use the appropriate local channel; this lesson does not assess urgency or replace safety instructions.
Arrange a visit and clarify access
Quand quelqu’un peut-il passer ? (When can someone come by?) asks about availability. Passer in this context means to visit briefly, not to pass an examination. If you are offered a time window, repeat its beginning and end rather than confirming only the day.
A scheduling exchange
Contact: Le technicien peut passer vendredi entre neuf heures et midi. (The technician can come on Friday between nine and noon.)
Tenant: Je suis disponible jusqu’à onze heures. Un autre créneau serait possible ? (I am available until eleven. Would another time slot be possible?)
Contact: Je vais lui demander. (I will ask him.)
Tenant: Merci. Pouvez-vous me confirmer l’horaire par message ? (Thank you. Can you confirm the time by message?)
The contact’s promise to ask is not confirmation of a new slot. Wait for the actual reply. For access, ask Comment souhaitez-vous organiser l’accès au logement ? (How would you like to arrange access to the property?). This requests an arrangement without assuming permission or any particular key-handling procedure.
Common mistakes in repair messages
Une location (A rental) does not mean a geographical location. Le logement (The dwelling or property) refers to the place you occupy. If you mean where the fault is, name the room rather than using the English-looking noun. Dans la salle de bains (In the bathroom) is often enough.
Réparer (To repair) and remplacer (To replace) describe different actions. Unless a solution has been agreed, ask for someone to examine the problem rather than stating that a part must be replaced. Pouvez-vous faire vérifier la fenêtre ? (Can you arrange for the window to be checked?) leaves the technical conclusion open.
Memory tip: write an observation before a request
Draft two sentences separately. The first should be something another person could see, hear, or test; the second should ask for a response or appointment. Read them without the greeting. If the fault and desired next step are still clear, you have the core of a useful message.
Practice: improve the repair request
- Say the kitchen tap has been dripping since yesterday.
- A visit is proposed for the whole morning, but you are available only after ten. Explain that limit.
- Follow up on an earlier message without claiming that nobody has done anything.
Answers and explanations
- Le robinet de la cuisine goutte depuis hier. (The kitchen tap has been dripping since yesterday.) The sentence gives the object, location, and duration.
- Je suis disponible seulement à partir de dix heures. (I am available only from ten onwards.) The starting point is explicit.
- Je reviens vers vous au sujet de mon précédent message. Avez-vous des nouvelles ? (I am following up on my previous message. Do you have any news?) This requests an update without guessing what happened behind the scenes.
