Quick answer

To reschedule, say Je voudrais déplacer mon rendez-vous (I would like to move my appointment), then identify the original date and offer an alternative. Reporter usually moves it later; avancer moves it earlier. Décaler needs a direction or a new time. Repeat the agreed date at the end so both people know which appointment is replacing the old one.

Identify the appointment before changing it

I am calling about my Tuesday appointment) gives the receptionist a starting point. Add the time or your name when needed. Name the service too if necessary.

Then state the request: Je ne pourrai pas venir. Serait-il possible de changer la date ? (I will not be able to come. Would it be possible to change the date?). You have not cancelled everything; you have asked about a replacement. This distinction matters when you still want the service but cannot attend the original slot.

For saying the appointment’s clock time, the time lesson explains hours, minutes, and the 24-hour clock.

A concise opening

(Hello, I have an appointment on Thursday at three p.m. under the name Brown. I would like to move this appointment, if possible.)

A long personal explanation is unnecessary. A brief apology can follow if appropriate: Je suis désolé pour ce changement (I am sorry about this change). A woman writes désolée in that sentence, although the spoken pronunciation is the same.

Choose a verb that gives the right direction

VerbEnglish glossWhat to clarify
Déplacer(To move)The proposed replacement date
Reporter(To postpone)How much later or until when
Avancer(To bring forward)The earlier date or time
Décaler(To shift)Earlier, later, or a named new slot
Annuler(To cancel)Whether you still want another appointment

Reporter à vendredi (To postpone until Friday) names the new day. Reporter d’une semaine (To postpone by a week) gives the amount of movement. The preposition changes the information supplied. If either person could misunderstand the starting date, name the replacement date explicitly rather than relying on a relative interval.

Avancer d’une heure (To bring forward by an hour) means earlier, not later. Use plus tôt (Earlier) or plus tard (Later) to remove that ambiguity. A new clock time is even clearer when you are arranging a specific slot.

Offer alternatives the other person can check

Je suis disponible mercredi matin ou vendredi après-midi (I am available on Wednesday morning or Friday afternoon) gives two workable periods. Quand vous voulez (Whenever you like) sounds flexible, but it is unhelpful if you later reject most suggestions. Offer the availability you actually have.

A rescheduling call

(Could we postpone my appointment until Friday?)

(On Friday, there is a slot left at eleven.)

(Eleven works for me.)

(Very well, I will put you down for Friday at eleven.)

Un créneau (A time slot) names an available period. Il reste (There is left) tells you about remaining availability, not a fixed guarantee that the slot stays open indefinitely. In this dialogue, the receptionist’s final statement confirms the booking rather than merely suggesting a possibility.

For a date that could be ambiguous, add the day of the month. Write Vendredi 20 (Friday the twentieth) to identify more than the weekday alone. The date in French guide explains date forms and helps you avoid carrying an English format directly into your confirmation.

Confirm what replaces the old arrangement

(So, we are replacing Tuesday’s appointment with Friday’s?) checks the relationship between the two slots. An offered alternative is not necessarily a confirmed change.

Ask Pouvez-vous m’envoyer une confirmation ? (Can you send me a confirmation?) if you need written details. If you receive a message with the old time, refer to the mismatch specifically: Le message indique encore quinze heures (The message still says three p.m.). Avoid simply replying that “it is wrong” without naming the detail.

Check the time window

À partir de dix heures (From ten onwards) is not the same as avant dix heures (Before ten). Jusqu’à midi (Until noon) gives an endpoint. These expressions define availability limits, not just a clock reading.

Write a polite rescheduling email

Use a subject such as Demande de modification de rendez-vous (Request to change an appointment). In the message, identify the current booking, ask for a change, and give your alternatives.

(I will not be able to attend on Tuesday. Would it be possible to arrange another slot this week? I am available on Thursday afternoon.) A woman uses présente for herself in writing.

Convenir d’un créneau (To agree on a time slot) is more formal than trouver un autre moment (To find another time). Both work; choose according to your relationship. The formal email vocabulary guide offers further wording without requiring you to make every routine message sound ceremonial.

Common mistakes with cancellation and uncertainty

Je voudrais annuler (I would like to cancel) can end the arrangement without requesting another slot. If you want to reschedule, name that goal. Conversely, do not say a new date is confirmed merely because you asked for it: j’ai demandé vendredi (I asked for Friday) is not c’est confirmé pour vendredi (It is confirmed for Friday).

Memory tip: keep two dates on the page

Write “original” beside the current booking and “proposed” beside the alternative. Change “proposed” to “confirmed” only after the other person agrees. This small language exercise keeps requests, offers, and confirmations separate, especially during a call where several available times are mentioned quickly.

Practice: move the booking clearly

  1. Ask to bring an appointment forward, explicitly saying earlier.
  2. Say you can attend only after two p.m.
  3. Check that Friday replaces Tuesday, rather than becoming an additional appointment.

Answers and explanations

(Would it be possible to move the appointment to an earlier time?) The direction is explicit.
  2. Je suis disponible seulement après quatorze heures. (I am available only after two p.m.) This gives a lower limit, not a fixed appointment time.
(Friday’s appointment does replace Tuesday’s, correct?) The question checks the replacement rather than merely repeating a date.
