Oceania and elsewhere
French Polynesia and New Caledonia. French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity with substantial autonomy and its own local government. New Caledonia’s status is actively evolving: it remains a French territory today, but has held multiple independence referendums since 2018, and France and New Caledonian leaders have been negotiating a new political arrangement - including a 2025 accord proposing expanded autonomy and a distinct New Caledonian nationality alongside French citizenship - with the outcome still being worked out through ongoing talks and local elections.
La Francophonie: the organization
The Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) connects French-speaking countries and communities around shared linguistic and cultural ties, including member states where French isn’t the primary spoken language but retains historical, cultural, or administrative importance. It publishes regular reports on the global state of the French language and coordinates cooperation among member states on education, culture, and development.
