Annoncer vs Prévenir: Share News or Give Notice?
Choose annoncer or prévenir when sharing news and notifying people in French. Learn the different object patterns through a worked message and corrected practice.
A neighborhood group opens a seed swap to the public. The organizer wants to share the news, but also needs to tell the volunteers that setup will start earlier than usual. Both messages communicate information. Their purposes differ, and French makes a useful grammatical distinction between the information announced and the people notified.
Quick answer
Use annoncer to make news or information known: annoncer quelque chose à quelqu’un. Use prévenir to notify someone, often so they can prepare or avoid a problem: prévenir quelqu’un de quelque chose. The recipient’s grammatical role changes. You announce the information to a person, but you notify the person of the information. Neither verb requires a public speech.

Choose the purpose before the verb
Le groupe annonce l’ouverture du jardin (The group announces the opening of the garden) presents news. Le groupe prévient les bénévoles du changement d’horaire (The group informs the volunteers of the schedule change) puts the affected people first: they need the information to organize themselves.
| Purpose | Construction | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Share a piece of news | annoncer + information | Elle annonce sa participation. (She announces that she is taking part.) |
| Tell a person the news | annoncer + information + à + person | Elle annonce sa décision à Malik. (She tells Malik her decision.) |
| Give someone notice | prévenir + person + de + information | Elle prévient Malik de son arrivée. (She lets Malik know that she is coming.) |
| State the information in a clause | prévenir + person + que | Elle prévient Malik qu’elle viendra tôt. (She tells Malik she will come early.) |
The same event can be described from either angle. Announcing a change emphasizes making it known. Notifying a particular person emphasizes their need to know. There is no rule that annoncer must address a crowd while prévenir must address one individual.
Put the information after annoncer
In the ordinary news-sharing construction, what is announced is the direct object. Nous annonçons la date aux participants (We announce the date to the participants) contains a date and a recipient group. The preposition à, contracted with les to aux, introduces those recipients.
A complete clause is possible: Nous annonçons que le jardin ouvrira samedi (We announce that the garden will open on Saturday). You do not need to insert de before que. The clause supplies the information in a full statement rather than packaging it as a noun.
The familiar verb dire often works when no special emphasis on an announcement is needed. The comparison of parler and dire covers speaking versus saying something. Choosing annoncer here gives the communication the character of news being made known; it does not simply make the sentence more formal.
Put the recipient after prévenir
Préviens Clara avant de venir (Let Clara know before you come) gives Clara time to prepare. The recipient follows directly, without à. If you specify the information as a noun, add de: Préviens Clara de ton arrivée (Let Clara know about your arrival).
Prévenir can also mean warning someone: Je vous préviens, la salle sera bruyante (I am warning you, the room will be noisy). But a warning is not the only possible meaning. A friendly request to let someone know when you leave need not suggest danger, anger, or criticism.
Avoid reading a threat into every notice
Préviens-moi quand tu pars (Let me know when you leave) can be a practical arrangement between friends. Tone and context matter. By contrast, an isolated Je te préviens ! (I am warning you!) can sound confrontational. If your purpose is logistical, name the useful information instead of relying on a dramatic bare formula.
The related meaning “prevent” is possible in combinations such as prévenir un problème (Prevent a problem). That construction concerns the problem itself, not a person being told something. Read the object before assuming that a familiar-looking English translation fits.
Pronouns reveal the object difference
Compare Je lui annonce la nouvelle (I tell her the news) with Je la préviens du changement (I notify her of the change). Lui marks an indirect recipient after the announcing construction; la replaces the direct object of notifying. The choice follows the French verb, not the English word “her.”
For a male recipient, the parallel pair is Je lui annonce la nouvelle (I tell him the news) and Je le préviens du changement (I notify him of the change). Notice that lui does not change with gender. See the French pronoun guide for the complete object system.
With several people, write Nous leur annonçons la date (We announce the date to them), but Nous les prévenons à l’avance (We notify them in advance). Learning this pair helps you catch an error that a vocabulary-only translation might miss.
Worked task: one event, two audiences
The seed swap will take place on Sunday. Visitors may arrive at ten. Volunteers need to come at nine because the tables must be arranged. Draft a public announcement and a separate message to volunteers, keeping the two arrival times clear.
Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer notre échange de graines dimanche. Le jardin accueillera les visiteurs à partir de dix heures. (We are pleased to announce our seed swap on Sunday. The garden will welcome visitors from ten o’clock.)
Bonjour, je vous préviens que l’installation commencera à neuf heures. Pouvez-vous arriver à cette heure-là pour préparer les tables ? (Hello, I am letting you know that setup will start at nine. Can you arrive then to prepare the tables?)
The public version introduces the event. The volunteer version gives notice of a specific arrangement and requests a response. Both are original sample messages, not claims about a real event. The French email guide can help with greetings and closings if you expand either into a full email.
Common mistakes and a memory tip
Avoid prévenir à Clara: the person is direct. Avoid annoncer Clara la nouvelle for telling Clara the news: introduce her with à. Do not change only the preposition when revising; locate the information and recipient in the whole sentence.
For a memory tip, underline “news” after annoncer and “person” after prévenir. Then draw the remaining relationship: news goes to someone; someone is informed of something. Special meanings exist, but this contrast gives you a dependable starting point for ordinary notices.
Practice: deliver the right message
- Complete Je ___ la date à mes voisins when presenting the date as news.
- Replace mes voisins in Je préviens mes voisins du bruit with a pronoun.
- Explain why Je lui annonce le changement and Je le préviens du changement use different pronouns.
Explained answers
For 1, annonce matches the information-plus-recipient structure. For 2, write Je les préviens du bruit (I warn them about the noise). For 3, the first person is introduced by à and becomes lui; the second is a direct object and becomes le. Both can concern the same man, but the governing constructions assign him different grammatical roles.
