Joindre vs Rejoindre: Contact, Attach, or Join? - article illustration

You need to contact a workshop organizer, send a photograph, and join the group later. English “join” looks close to both joindre and rejoindre, but neither French verb covers all three actions in the same way. The object and intended result tell you which construction belongs in each part of your message.

Quick answer

Joindre quelqu’un often means reaching or contacting someone, especially remotely. Joindre un document à un message means attaching it. Rejoindre quelqu’un means going to join that person or reaching them; it can also describe joining a group or an online meeting. Read the whole situation. Contacting a person does not establish that you have joined them, and an attached file needs its own object construction.

Contact a person with joindre

Je n’arrive pas à joindre Samir (I cannot get hold of Samir) usually describes unsuccessful contact. Perhaps calls go unanswered or messages receive no reply. It does not usually mean that you are walking behind him and cannot catch up.

Add the channel when useful: Vous pouvez me joindre par téléphone cet après-midi (You can reach me by phone this afternoon). The channel and time make the statement actionable. They do not promise that the speaker is available by every method or throughout the day.

Intended actionConstructionExample
Reach a person remotelyjoindre + personJ’ai joint la responsable. (I reached the person in charge.)
Include a documentjoindre + document + à + messageJe joins la photo au message. (I am attaching the photograph to the message.)
Go to where a person isrejoindre + personJe rejoins Nina au parc. (I am joining Nina at the park.)
Join a gatheringrejoindre + group or meetingElle rejoint le groupe. (She joins the group.)

Do not use the prefix as a compulsory “again” signal in English. Joining a group can happen for the first time. Translate the event described, not an assumed story of returning that the sentence may not contain.

Attach a document without changing the recipient

Je joins le plan à ce courriel (I am attaching the map to this email) has two objects in different roles: the map is what is attached, and the email is what it is attached to. The preposition à introduces the second relationship.

In a practical message, you can say Vous trouverez le plan en pièce jointe (You will find the map attached). Use this only when the attachment is actually included. The French email guide supplies broader message structure; the attachment sentence should describe the real content sent.

Keep the noun’s gender in view

Une pièce jointe (An attachment) uses the feminine adjective form because pièce is feminine. In J’ai joint une photo (I attached a photograph), joint is part of the compound verb, and the object follows it. The two similar-looking phrases should not be copied as if they had identical grammar.

If several files are expected, identify what you have included: Je joins le plan, mais pas encore les photos (I am attaching the map, but not the photographs yet). This avoids an overly broad claim that “the documents” are present when only one is ready.

Join someone rather than merely contact them

Je te rejoins devant le cinéma (I will join you outside the cinema) describes reaching the person’s location. It can imply that the other person is there first or is expected there. It does not by itself describe an introduction or establish whether the two people already know each other.

J’ai réussi à le joindre, puis je l’ai rejoint au café (I managed to reach him, then I joined him at the café) gives two distinct steps. The first succeeds in making contact; the second brings the people together. Removing that distinction could make the sequence difficult to understand.

Rejoindre une réunion en ligne (Join an online meeting) describes entering a gathering rather than necessarily calling an individual participant. Joining can therefore extend beyond physical arrival.

Choose pronouns from the full construction

In the ordinary person constructions, both verbs take direct objects: Je la joins (I contact her) and Je la rejoins (I join her). Do not add à simply because English says “get through to her.” The French object relationship determines the pronoun.

For plural people, use les: Nous les rejoindrons après le déjeuner (We will join them after lunch). The French pronoun guide explains the wider system. A place phrase after the person does not turn that person into an indirect object.

When the pronoun represents a file

La photo, je la joins au message (I am attaching the photograph to the message) uses la for an object. The noun and the à phrase establish attachment rather than contact. The pronoun alone cannot identify the verb’s meaning.

Worked task: coordinate three separate actions

You have spoken to the organizer, are attaching a sketch, and will join the group in the courtyard at two. Draft a message that keeps those events and times separate.

J’ai joint l’organisatrice ce matin. Elle a confirmé le lieu. Je joins mon croquis à ce message et je vous rejoindrai dans la cour à quatorze heures. (I reached the organizer this morning. She confirmed the location. I am attaching my sketch to this message, and I will join you in the courtyard at two.)

The first verb reports completed contact. The second occurrence introduces the sketch, an object attached now. The final verb describes a future joining action. The message does not claim that sending the sketch places the writer physically with the group.

If the location is unclear, ask Où est-ce que je vous rejoins exactement ? (Where exactly should I join you?) The French question guide offers other ways to form the request. Asking for a precise location is different from asking which contact channel to use.

Common mistakes and a memory tip

Do not use je te joins au café as your default way to say that you are going to meet someone there. It can suggest contacting them while they are at the café. Je te rejoins au café communicates the intended movement more clearly.

For a memory tip, label the object “person to contact,” “document to attach,” or “person/group to join.” Then identify the result. A conversation, an included file, and a shared location are different outcomes, even if all belong to one set of arrangements.

Practice: select the outcome

  1. You reached the organizer by phone. Complete J’ai ___ l’organisateur par téléphone.
  2. You are attaching a drawing. Complete Je ___ le dessin au courriel.
  3. You will join your friends at the entrance. Translate the whole sentence.

Explained answers

Use joint in 1: the contact occurred. Use joins in 2: the direct object is the drawing. For 3, Je rejoindrai mes amis à l’entrée (I will join my friends at the entrance) names the people directly and adds a location. The future stem is rejoindr-, so keep the d when conjugating.
