Apprendre vs Enseigner: Who Learns and Who Teaches?
Track learner and teacher roles with apprendre and enseigner. Compare learning skills, teaching someone, and finding out information through worked French examples.
One person learns to knit; another teaches them. French can use apprendre on either side of that exchange, which surprises English speakers taught only “apprendre means learn.” The surrounding construction identifies the roles. Enseigner makes the teaching perspective explicit, but it does not replace every natural use of apprendre.
Quick answer
Apprendre can mean learning something, learning to do something, finding out information, or teaching something to someone. The recipient and complement reveal the intended direction. Enseigner means teaching or transmitting knowledge, often a subject or skill. Track who gains the knowledge and who provides it before translating. A sentence with apprendre à needs the rest of the phrase to be understood accurately.

Identify the learner in a basic sentence
J’apprends le français (I am learning French) makes the subject the learner. J’apprends à tricoter (I am learning to knit) also places the learning with the subject, but introduces the skill as an infinitive after à. No separate recipient is present in either sentence.
| Construction | Example | Who learns? |
|---|---|---|
| apprendre + subject matter | Lina apprend l’italien. (Lina is learning Italian.) | Lina |
| apprendre à + infinitive | Lina apprend à nager. (Lina is learning to swim.) | Lina |
| apprendre something à someone | Lina apprend les règles à Noé. (Lina teaches Noé the rules.) | Noé |
| apprendre à someone à do | Lina apprend à Noé à tricoter. (Lina teaches Noé to knit.) | Noé |
The repeated à in the last row is not an accidental duplication. One introduces the person receiving instruction; the other introduces the skill. Reading only the first two words would leave the direction of learning unresolved.
A recipient can turn apprendre into teaching
Mon frère m’a appris à faire du vélo (My brother taught me to ride a bicycle) places the brother in the teaching role and m’ in the learner role. The sentence is ordinary French; it does not need to be corrected merely because a dictionary’s first translation of apprendre is “learn.”
The broader common French mistakes guide mentions this contrast. Here the important step is to identify the actual recipient. Ask who ends up acquiring the skill, rather than assigning “learner” to the grammatical subject in every sentence.
Replace the recipient without changing the roles
J’apprends cette chanson aux enfants (I am teaching the children this song) becomes Je leur apprends cette chanson (I am teaching them this song). The learners are introduced by à in the full version, so the plural recipient pronoun is leur.
With one person, use lui: Je lui apprends à lire la carte (I am teaching him or her to read the map). The French pronoun guide explains these indirect recipients. A pronoun can hide the original à, but the underlying relationship remains.
Use enseigner for an explicit teaching perspective
Elle enseigne la musique (She teaches music) clearly describes instruction. Add the learners with à: Elle enseigne la musique à des adultes (She teaches music to adults). You can also state the occupation generally: Il enseigne dans une école (He teaches in a school).
This verb often suits a subject or organized body of knowledge. However, teaching is not restricted to formal employment, and apprendre quelque chose à quelqu’un is not inherently incorrect or childish. Choose the expression that fits the relationship and the natural collocation.
For a small practical demonstration, Je vais te montrer comment plier la carte (I am going to show you how to fold the map) may be more direct than either verb. It describes the demonstration itself. Do not make your sentence more elaborate simply to use the vocabulary pair in every situation.
Separate learning a skill from knowing it
J’apprends à cuisiner (I am learning to cook) describes learning underway. Je sais cuisiner (I know how to cook) describes an ability. The second statement is stronger about present capability; it does not simply rename the same stage of progress.
Similarly, J’ai appris cette règle (I learned this rule) reports an acquisition, while Je connais cette règle (I know this rule) describes familiarity now. The savoir and connaître lesson covers the knowledge verbs. A careful progress update distinguishes work being attempted from what the learner can already do.
Finding out is another learning meaning
J’ai appris que le cours était complet (I found out that the class was full) concerns new information, not studying a skill. In Le professeur nous a appris que le cours était complet (The teacher told us that the class was full), the teacher transmits the information. The recipient again changes the direction.
Do not translate this as a claim that the teacher trained the group to make a class full. The following que clause states a fact learned or communicated. It is a different kind of complement from an infinitive naming an ability.
Worked task: describe a skill exchange
Two fictional friends exchange skills: Maëlle is learning photography from Hugo; Hugo is learning to mend a button from Maëlle. Write a short description that identifies both roles without making the same person the teacher of everything.
Maëlle apprend la photographie avec Hugo. Il lui apprend à régler l’appareil. De son côté, Maëlle lui apprend à recoudre un bouton. Ils prennent le temps de montrer chaque geste. (Maëlle is learning photography with Hugo. He teaches her to adjust the camera. In turn, Maëlle teaches him to sew a button back on. They take time to demonstrate each action.)
The first sentence establishes Maëlle as a learner. The next makes Hugo the instructor and lui the recipient. The third names Maëlle at the role change, so the reader can identify who teaches sewing. Naming the new teacher is clearer than relying on a chain of ambiguous pronouns.
You could say that Hugo enseigne les bases de la photographie (Teaches the basics of photography) if you want to emphasize organized instruction. That wording does not establish a professional qualification or employment status; the sentence reports the teaching activity described.
Common mistakes and a memory tip
Avoid an automatic rule that the subject of apprendre must be the learner. Avoid omitting the recipient when you mean to teach somebody. J’apprends à dessiner says that I am learning to draw; je lui apprends à dessiner says that I teach someone else.
For a memory tip, draw an arrow from the knowledge provider to the learner. Then place the subject and any recipient pronoun on that arrow. The French sentence may start at either end, but the information should still flow in the intended direction.
Practice: assign the roles
- Who learns in Elle m’apprend à cuisiner?
- Translate “He teaches history to adults.”
- Translate “I found out that the workshop was closed.”
Explained answers
In 1, the speaker represented by m’ learns, while elle teaches. For 2, Il enseigne l’histoire à des adultes (He teaches history to adults) makes the subject and learners explicit. For 3, J’ai appris que l’atelier était fermé (I found out that the workshop was closed) reports information acquired. The que clause, not a teaching role, supplies what was learned.
